Ultra Black Hair Products, Company

Ultra Black Hair Products (UBH) is a line of hair care products for afro-textured hair. The product line includes shampoo, creme moisturizer, spray moisturizer and deep conditioner. With the exception of the shampoo (that contains a light fragrance), the products are fragrance and paraben free and all are designed specifically to promote the strength and growth of black hair.

In the early 1980’s, Cathy Howse had an idea that would change the black hair care industry forever. The company initially started out as a book publishing company but evolved into manufacturing black hair products that the industry lacked. Over the years to meet the need of afro textured hair, the company has seen many changes in its business and its products. With change comes opportunity, and UBH has always been ready and willing to embrace it. Yet, through it all, UBH is still dedicated to those who want to understand the truth about black hair. UBH is privately held and based in Denver, Colorado.

Cathy Howse, Ultra Black Hair Founder

Hello, I’m Cathy Howse founder of Ultra Black Hair Products. All of my young life, I wanted long hair. I always questioned why other races of people able to have long hair and not Black women. Realizing that God is just, I knew that Black women could have long hair too but that there had to be a common reason why so many of us had short hair. It was obvious it was growing but why would it never get past my shoulders is a question I often asked.

In the 1980s, after many years of unsuccessful attempts at growing my own hair, I began conducting research to determine the specific needs of black hair in order for it to grow long and healthy. Being a single mom raising two sons and holding down a corporate position during the day, I dedicated my spare time in the evenings and during the weekends to conducting my ground-breaking research. During this process, I uncovered many untruths about black hair which eventually led me to write my first book: Ultra Black Hair Growth, which at that time was the only proven black hair growth system in the world.

While writing my books on black hair care, a friend suggested why not take the next step and create my own product line. I decided to accept the challenge. After years of experimenting with product ingredients, I finally arrived at the right ingredients that would provide the needed levels of moisture, protein and scalp stimulation that would protect black hair from breaking because of its inherent dryness and promote its growth. My persistent research and experimentation to demystify the misconceptions around black hair has led to the successful mail-order and on-line business that UBH is today.
